Researchers from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and De Beers will discuss ‘concerns’ over synthetic diamonds at GIA GemFest at Baselworld, March 22.

GIA said that technology for creating synthetic diamonds has “improved significantly” over the last decade and, as a result, gem-quality synthetic diamonds have appeared in greater quantities and received wider media exposure.

It added that reports of synthetics being presented as natural have raised “concerns” within the industry.

The discussion will look at latest research on synthetic diamonds and their identification, and how GIA and De Beers are working to meet the on-going challenges posed by potential non-disclosure.

The discussion will be moderated by Tom Moses, executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer for GIA, along with Simon Lawson, UK head of technologies for De Beers and Wuyi Wang, director of research and development at GIA.
