Machete found after smash-and-grab robbery

Robbers who smashed their way into a jewellery shop, are believed to have sped away from the scene on mopeds.

The police are appealing for witnesses in Banstead town centre at 2.15pm Friday (16 June).

Surrey Police received a report of the armed robbery at Campbells of Banstead Ltd.

It is reported that a group of offenders smashed their way into the shop through the front door of the premises. A number of glass cabinets were smashed and a quantity of watches and jewellery were taken.

Although the investigation is still in the very early stages it is believed there are a number of offenders.

Just after the incident a number of moped were seen to leave the vicinity in different directions.

One moped which is believed to be connected to the incident was abandoned at the scene.

The suspects are all believed to have been wearing dark clothing and helmets.

One of the perpetrators was seen to be carrying a bladed weapon.

A machete has been recovered by Police nearby. No injuries have been reported.

Numerous units are in the area carrying out a search for the offenders and residents may notice a heightened police presence while this investigation is ongoing.

Sergeant James Manning from Reigate and Banstead Area Patrol Team, said, “This was understandably an extremely frightening ordeal for the shop staff and something they are unlikely to forget – but thankfully nobody has been injured.

“Officers arrived at the scene within minutes and the premises has been fully secured and I would like to reassure the local community that we are doing all we can to trace the people involved in this incident.

“A number of enquiries are taking place and we are appealing for any witnesses who have not already spoken to police to call 101 and quote P17148422. Similarly, anyone with any footage which may assist should get in touch.

“There is no place for violent crime in our communities and I urge anyone who might have any information which could help the investigation to contact Surrey Police as a matter of urgency.”
