The National Association of Goldsmith’s (N.A.G), the British Jeweller’s Association (BJA), the National Pawnbrokers Association (NPA) and the Surrey Police have come up with this voluntary code.

The guidelines that the gold standard sets out are based on years of problems in both the precious and scrap metal industries.

The Minister for Crime Prevention Lord Henley said: “This initiative will really help to reduce the chance of jewellers unwittingly buying or selling stolen goods, and provide greater confidence to people who want to sell items on to trusted dealers. It is a good example of what can be achieved when business and police work together to cut crime in the communities in which they operate.”
