Two men have been caught on camera just minutes after carrying out a raid on a jewellery store in Manchester city centre.
The two men were riding a lime green motorcycle and approached Arthur Kay and Brothers Jewellers on Market Street at around 2:50pm on Thursday, July 2, where one jumped off the motorcycle and used a sledgehammer to smash the store’s display window.
The man stole jewellery from within the store before jumping back on the motorcycle and driving off towards Blackfriars Road.
The theft came just 20 minutes after the nearby Marks & Spencer was evacuated due to a bomb scare when a suspicious bag was found by a staff member. It is not clear if there is a link between the incidents.
In the footage members of the public can be seen chasing the robbers and hurling objects at them as they try to flee the scene.
Detective Inspector Brian Morley said: “This robbery occurred on one of the city centre’s busiest streets in broad daylight, so we are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and contact police as soon as possible.
“Fortunately no one was injured during this incident, but that takes nothing away from the severity of this crime. If anyone took any pictures or video on their mobile phones please contact us as a matter of urgency.
“Likewise, the men were driving a distinctive motorcycle and wearing distinctive helmets, so if anyone saw them drive away following the robbery we would very much like to know in which direction they were going.”
