Tell me about the history of Joshua James Jewellery?
Since 2009, Joshua James has sourced fine jewellery, charms, watches and fashion pieces from some of the world’s top brands.
Founded by managing director Shaun Bell, the flagship store opened on The Weir in the popular town of Hessle, East Yorkshire, overlooked by the Humber Bridge and continues to thrive amongst a variety of boutique stores. The main focus of the business from the start was to develop the online side of the business as we saw a gap in the market at that time. This still drives us and is a major focus of the business today.
What are the main collections that you offer?
Currently our biggest brand by some margin is Nomination, we have been with Nomination pretty much from the start of their launch in the UK, and have developed a loyal following as a result.
What is your favourite piece of jewellery you have to offer?
I don’t have any one favourite piece but what gives me and the staff the most joy has to be selling wedding rings. It’s an honour to be a part of the decision making for any couple getting married.
What do you see as the biggest accomplishment so far?
Winning retailer of the year at the British Jewellers’ Association (BJA) 125th Anniversary Awards was a great accomplishment. It felt amazing to get that recognition for all the work we had put in.
What has been the biggest challenge?
We come face to face with challenges on a day to day basis, be it competition, consumer confidence or any number of other things but I always think it’s the way in which you deal with those challenges that’s important. You are learning constantly in the business, so it’s important not to get disheartened and always try to find a solution.
What are your goals for the business in 2019?
We intend develop our own branded jewellery this year. It’s always something we have dipped in and out of but never given it too much focus. Now we will really start to channel our creativity and expertise into the this new venture.
