NAJ Summit 2021 to discuss LGDs

The National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) has announced that its upcoming 2021 summit will feature conversations on laboratory-grown diamonds (LGDs).
Three speakers will focus on LGDs, providing masterclasses and hands-on workshops as part of the valuers’ conference, taking place from 11-13 September 2021.
Julia Griffith, founder of The Gem Academy, will host an ‘identifying laboratory-grown diamonds’ workshop, which will include basic observation skills, magnetism, UV reactions, strain effects under cross-polarised filters, and commercially available screening equipment.
She said: “My practical workshop will give attendees the rare chance to handle a range of laboratory-grown diamonds that exhibit tell-tale features that disclose their artificial origin.
“All attendees will gain awareness of the possibilities and, more importantly, the limitations posed upon us when testing for laboratory-grown diamonds.”
Richard Taylor, director at Taylor and Co Valuations, will focus his masterclass on ‘managing the risks and embracing the opportunities’ of LGDs.
During his speech, Taylor will discuss the legal framework and retailer responsibilities regarding the sale, repair, purchasing, and second-hand trading of LGDs.
He said that he wants all attendees to leave “with a perspective of the market from the past, present, and future”.
Finally, Andrew Fellows, gemmology and diamond lecturer at Birmingham City University, is set to discuss the history of synthetics, while also providing a range of samples of LGDs during his workshop.
